Things on my mind… ‘Hang Massive’

Though this sound is around for quite some time, but I discovered it just recently and fell in love with it instantly. I read about it and sharing it here. It is about Hang, this instrument, also called a “handpan,” which emits both drum-like rhythms and delicate harmonies. A unique mix of percussion and melody. “Hang” meaning “hand” in Bernese German.

The sound has relaxing, calming, healing quality. My favourite is ‘Hang Massive’ Band. When I listen to their music, I start travelling to another realm of time and space. I call it Music for the soul!

The founding members, Danny Cudd and Markus Offbeat, met on the shores of Goa, India, forging their creative partnership in its vibrant international arts scene. The Duo started their magical journey of creating soulful music together in 2011 with their first music release and video ‘Once Again‘, which gained wide renown and was watched over 60 million times online. About:

The Hang (German pronunciation: [haŋ]; plural form: Hanghang) is a musical instrument, a handpan, fitting into the idiophone class. It was created by Felix Rohner and Sabina Schärer in BernSwitzerland. The name of their company is PANArt Hangbau AG. The Hang is sometimes referred to as a hang drum, but the inventors consider this a misnomer and strongly discourage its use.

The instrument is constructed from two half-shells of deep drawnnitrided steel sheet glued together at the rim leaving the inside hollow and creating the shape of a convex lens. The top (“Ding”) side has a center ‘note’ hammered into it and seven or eight ‘tone fields’ hammered around the center. The bottom (“Gu”) is a plain surface that has a rolled hole in the center with a tuned note that can be created when the rim is struck.

The Hang uses some of the same basic physical principles as a steelpan, but modified in such a way as to act as a Helmholtz resonator ( Helmholtz resonance or wind throb is the phenomenon of air resonance in a cavity, such as when one blows across the top of an empty bottle. The name comes from a device created in the 1850s by Hermann von Helmholtz, the Helmholtz resonator, which he used to identify the various frequencies or musical pitches present in music and other complex sounds. ). The creation of the Hang was the result of many years of research on the steelpan and other instruments.  The inventors of the Hang have continued to refine the shape and materials and have produced several variations over the years.
