चांद और सितारे

डरते-डरते दमे-सहर से
तारे कह्ने लगे क़मर से

नज़ारे रहे वही फ़लक पर
हम थक भी गये चमक-चमक कर

काम अपना है सुबह-ओ-शाम चलना
चलना, चलना, मुदाम चलना

बेताब है इस जहां की हर शै
कहते है जिसे सकूं, नहीं है

होगा कभी ख़त्म यह सफ़र क्या

मंज़िल कभी आयेगी नज़र क्या?
कहने लगा चांद, हमनशीनो!

ए गज़रअ-ए-शब के ख़ोशाचीनो !
जुंबिश से है ज़िन्दगी जहां की

यह रस्म क़दीम है यहां की
इस रह में मुक़ाम बेमहल है

पोशीदा क़रार में अज़ल है
चलने वाले निकल गए हैं

जो ठहरे ज़रा, कुचल गए हैं

The Moon and The Stars

Trembling at the approach of dawn

The stars to the moon said:

Morning and evening we are moving through the sky

Eternal wandering is our lot

While the sky beside us changeless lies;

Shining on it, we are tired indeed;

Why does the world know, no peace,

Why is everything restless here?

Will this journey ever end?

Shall we ever reach our destination?

“You, who gleam the field of night, my comrades dear”

Replied the moon

“Only in change, the beauty of life lies”

Rest is its anti-thesis

Only those who move, their goal attain

And the ones who stop, live and die in vain.
